FAQ

Ferry Information

To get a ticket for the ferry, you will need to walk (it’s a 2-3 minute walk from Moonlight Bay Hostel) to the ferry reservation window and get in the line for your desired ferry. There is a line for each destination. Example: If you want to purchase tickets for Culebra, you will need to get into the “Culebra” line.

Directions to the ferry reservation window and terminal:

1. Buy a lot of beer at the front desk – you may be in line for hours; you’ll need refreshments.

2. Go out the front door and turn right. Walk down the street through the white archway.

3. Turn left, walk past the US Customs House and the bar. The ferry reservation windows will be on your left. The ferry terminal is on the right.

Ferry Terminal

Ferry terminal Fajardo, Puerto Rico

First Come, First Serve. Ferry tickets are sold on a “first come, first serve” basis to whomever is in line. You will need to buy a ticket for a particular destination and time such as the “1 PM ferry to Vieques”.

Ferries book up quickly. It is a good idea to get in line at least 1.5 hours before your desired departure time. Example: if you want to catch the 1:00 PM Ferry to Vieques, get in line for tickets by 11:30 AM.

**The 9:00 AM ferry to Culebra is the busiest ferry and you may need to get in line 2-4 hours prior to departure. Example: you may need to get in line at 5 – 6 AM to get a ticket for the 9 AM ferry. **

Sold Out. If you are in line to purchase tickets and your desired ferry gets sold out, you might be able to get tickets for the next scheduled ferry to the same location. When a ferry is sold out and there are still people in line, ferry personnel will sell 50 tickets for the next scheduled ferry. If you aren’t one of those first 50 for the next ferry, you will have to come back and purchase tickets an hour or two prior to the next scheduled departure time.

Sold Out – Example: You want to purchase tickets for the 9 AM ferry to Culebra. You get out of bed and in line at 6 AM. Despite this, the 9 AM Culebra ferry is sold out. The next available Culebra ferry is 3 PM. If you are one of the first 50 people in line after the 9 AM Culebra ferry is sold out, you will be able to purchase tickets for the 3 PM Culebra ferry. If you are not one of the first 50 in line, you will need to come back around 1 PM to purchase tickets for the 3 PM Culebra ferry.

The ferry reservation windows are open from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. However, not all windows are open at all times. If a particular destination window is open, you will be able to purchase tickets for the next scheduled ferry to that destination. And you might be able purchase tickets for other destinations and times. If you go early in the morning when lines are longest, you will only be able to buy tickets for the next ferry. If you go to the reservation window in the afternoon, you might be able to purchase tickets for ferries leaving later in the day or even the next day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Can I buy ferry tickets online or over the phone?
Answer: No. You will need to buy tickets in person.

Question: Can I buy a ticket today for a ferry ride tomorrow?
Answer: Maybe (welcome to Puerto Rico!). If there is a long line and there are a lot people waiting the ferry personnel will not sell you a ticket for the next day. They will only sell you a ticket for the next ferry leaving the same day. However, if a reservation window is open, and there is not a line, then they might sell you a ticket for the next day. If you want to get tickets for the next day, it’s best to go in the afternoon when lines are shorter. There isn’t a definitive answer – that’s just the way Puerto Rico works.

Question: I have tickets for the 1 PM ferry, what time should I arrive at the terminal?
Answer: Arrive at the ferry terminal 30 minutes before your ferry is scheduled to leave.

Question: If I have already checked out but my ferry was sold out, what should I do?
Answer: Hang out on our roof-top patio; enjoy the view of the ocean and the jungle and have a few drinks.
